What is semi-permanent eyeliner?
Semi-permanent eyeliner — also known as eyeliner tattoo, permanent eyeliner, lash line tattoo or lash enhancement — is a cosmetic tattoo technique that deposits fine pigment along the upper lash line. The result is the look of beautifully defined eyes with a soft, smudge-proof finish that doesn't rub off, doesn't smear, and doesn't disappear by lunchtime.
Lorraine offers eyeliner across the full spectrum — from a subtle, barely-there lash line enhancement that simply adds depth and density between the lashes (the most natural eyeliner result possible — no one will know it's there), through to a classic defined eyeliner for a polished makeup-style finish, or a soft cat-eye flick for clients who wear winged liner every day and want to wake up with it already done. A genuinely no smudge eyeliner option — designed for everyday wear.
Who is eyeliner tattoo for?
The eyeliner clients Lorraine sees most often fall into a few clear groups:
- People who wear eyeliner every single day — and are tired of doing it. Eyeliner that doesn't rub off, doesn't smudge by 3pm, doesn't disappear during a workout. Wake up with eyeliner already in place.
- Mature clients whose lash line has thinned with age — eyelashes thin and lose pigment in your 50s, 60s and beyond, making eyes look less defined and more tired. A fine lash line enhancement restores the natural definition you used to have.
- Sparse, fair or invisible lashes — blonde, red and grey clients often have lashes so pale they don't show against the skin. Eyeliner pigment between the lashes creates the look of fuller, darker lashes without mascara.
- Sensitive eyes, allergies, watery eyes — anyone who can't wear traditional eyeliner because it runs, irritates or triggers allergic reactions. Once healed, the pigment sits in the skin and doesn't migrate.
- Active, sporty, busy lifestyles — swimmers, gym-goers, parents of young children, anyone who travels or works long days. Smudge-proof eyeliner that survives sweat, water and time.
- Clients with dexterity issues — vision changes, shaky hands, eye conditions that make applying makeup difficult. A pre-applied, permanent lash line takes that effort away entirely.
The three eyeliner styles Lorraine offers
Every treatment is carefully pre-drawn and designed to suit your eye shape, ensuring the most flattering result. Your preferences and desired look are discussed in detail during your consultation. At a high level, eyeliner tattoo falls into three styles:
Lash line enhancement (the most natural). Fine pigment is placed between the lashes themselves, deepening the lash line without creating a visible "liner" on the eyelid. From a normal viewing distance no one can see the work — they just register that your eyes look more defined. This is the most-requested style and what Lorraine recommends for most first-time clients, mature clients, and anyone wanting a natural result.
Classic defined eyeliner. A clear thin-to-medium line along the upper lash line, like a freshly-applied liquid eyeliner. The line is visible when your eyes are open. This style suits clients who already wear eyeliner daily and want the makeup-style finish without the daily application.
Soft cat-eye or winged eyeliner. Extends the line slightly past the outer corner of the eye with a subtle upward flick — the permanent version of a daily winged liner. Best for clients with stable eyelid skin who consistently wear winged liner and are confident in the long-term look.
Lorraine is upfront in consultation if a particular style won't suit your eye shape (winged liner is harder to wear on hooded or significantly mature eyelids, for example) and will recommend the style that gives you the result you want without the trade-offs you don't.
What makes Lorraine's eyeliner different
Lorraine runs a dedicated aesthetic clinic in Runaway Bay, Gold Coast, and brings 20 years in the cosmetic industry — with over a decade specialising in semi-permanent makeup. She trained extensively with leading international educators in Milan, London and Paris. Her approach to eyeliner is built on three principles:
- Eye-shape-led design. Every eyeliner is pre-drawn before any pigment is placed, reviewed with you in the mirror, and tailored to your specific eye shape — almond, hooded, round, downturned, monolid. The same liner doesn't suit every face.
- Restraint over thickness. Lorraine's eyeliner work is deliberately fine. Thick liner ages badly — it spreads as skin moves over time and looks heavier on mature skin than it did originally. Fine, well-placed pigment ages beautifully.
- Anatomy-aware placement. Pigment is never placed near the tear ducts or directly on the waterline (the wet inner rim). Both placements carry real medical risks. Lorraine works strictly along the lash line itself.
What to expect
-
Complimentary consultation
A 30-minute conversation about what you want, what suits your eye shape, and what's realistic. Lorraine looks at your eyes in natural light, talks through the three style options, and shows you reference photos. No pressure to book.
-
Pre-drawing and design
On the treatment day, Lorraine pre-draws the eyeliner shape with a soft cosmetic pencil — both eyes, mapped against your natural eye shape and any asymmetry. You see exactly where the liner will sit, how thick it will be, and (for winged styles) exactly where the flick will end. Nothing happens until you approve the design.
-
Colour selection
Most clients choose a deep black or soft black-brown. Lorraine mixes the pigment to suit your hair colour, skin tone, and the style chosen — black for classic and winged, sometimes softer charcoal-brown for lash line enhancement on fair clients.
-
Numbing
Medical-grade topical anaesthetic is applied to the closed eyelid before treatment and refreshed throughout. Most clients describe the sensation during the session as a light vibration or pressure — uncomfortable rather than painful.
-
The eyeliner tattoo (1.5–2 hours)
Working with the lash line through the closed lid, Lorraine places fine pigment along the lashes, building the line in light layers. The work is checked against the other eye repeatedly throughout to keep symmetry. Most clients find the experience surprisingly relaxing — many doze off.
-
Initial healing (5–10 days)
The liner looks bolder and darker than the final result for the first 4–5 days, with mild flaking around days 5–7 as the top layer of skin sheds. The 'ghost phase' between days 7–14 can make the line look lighter or even patchy — this is normal and resolves as the deeper pigment settles. Full healing takes 4–6 weeks.
-
Paid follow-up at 6–8 weeks
The refining session — where the eyeliner is darkened, evened out, or built up where it healed lighter. This is a separate appointment, booked and priced on its own so the cost is transparent up front. Most reputable artists charge for this because it's a substantial appointment, not a quick top-up.
